Jim Cousins calls for tougher sentences for dangerous drivers

Jim Cousins has met the family of local pensioner Harry Thompson whose killer received a paltry 18 month sentence for leaving him "dying in the road like a dog" and has pledged to them to try and bring in tougher traffic laws for road offences.

The Newcastle Journal has a leader on the story saying that if a driver gets arrested in a case like this it is the relatively minor road offences he gets tried for and not the death caused. In their opinion the death should be the focus of charges. I'll go along with that. However the fact he should not have been on the road at all due to being banned from driving, had 19 previous convictions for road offences as well as another 14 for driving without insurance surely meant he should have got much longer than 18 months anyway?
